Gary Vaynerchuck is one inspiring man!

November 6th, 2009

Just saw Gary at his book signing at Watchung Bookseller’s in Montclair, NJ.  I’ve watched his keynotes (INCREDIBLE), follow him on twitter, catch  a winelibrary.tv episode once in a while and generally am a fan.  I read Crush IT! and while I think its important reference material, his visual  stuff is where I am really inspired.  So when I heard he was coming to the little Montclair(my hometown) bookshop, I was excited to see how he would feel in person.  Boy was I blown away.  You could tell he walked in a little worn, he had just come off a plane from Chicago, but within a few minutes of talking his energy fired up and before you knew it his positive message was infecting everyone.

He gave us a solid hour of his time, then answered some questions.  When it came time to get my book signed he made an honest effort to have a personal connection with me, even remembering my business partner Billy Penn, @300guitars on Twitter. When I left I could see that everyone was brimming with energy, excited to Crush It!.  Sure, there were some folks reeling from his message, maybe a little concerned, others just trying to take it all in, but everyone went home with something to think about.

Fantastic signing Gary!  Thanks for the positive message!

Client Site: Nicholas-Wade.com Launched

Just launched for November 2009 and the release of his newest book, “The Faith Instinct”, I am proud to have taken part in Nicholas Wade’s new website.  Nicholas Wade for those that don’t know is a science writer and journalist for the New York Times.  Nicholas and I talked about the marketing strategies being employed for his new book back in the summer and he contacted me to move forward with our plans only a month ago.  We had an interesting challenge as aside from his articles and book listings there is almost no web presence for Nicholas.  So, my job was to give Nicholas a web home that:

  • reflects his good taste and clarity
  • introduces visitors to his newest book
  • gives visitors a little more information about Nicholas
  • reminds visitors of his previous book, “Before the Dawn”
  • and most of all, offers a way  for visitors to purchase the book

I chose the WordPress publishing platform and the Cordobo Green Park 2 theme as a starting point for the site.  Being that we only had about 3 weeks to launch the site I didn’t want to mess around with a from scratch theme, so I opted to customize Andreas Jacob’s super clean and pretty Cordobo Green Park 2 to show Nicholas’s favorite colors.   The rest of the work was fairly straightforward, we have a static home page, static pages for his media appearances, both books and a blog page where Nicholas can interact with his readers and fans.

It was a real pleasure working with Nicholas and I think his book will be another hit.  Quite a topic too:

“The Faith Instinct presents a novel approach to religion. It explores the evolutionary origins of religious behavior in early humans, and traces the cultural development of religion from its origins up until to the present day.

The book does not challenge the central belief of either atheists or people of faith, since it offers no opinion as to whether or not God exists. It’s about religious behavior and its value to the first human societies and their successors.”

A Great Teacher Passes: RIP Grandmaster Tauheed

November 3rd, 2009

Grand Master Tauheed

Master Bob | MySpace Vid

The man in the video above wearing the blue Gi and white Hakama was Grandmaster Tauheed, AKA James Davis, the founder of Tau Jitsu Ryu form Martials Arts. He was my teacher or Sensei in my practice of martial arts. He passed away this week of illness unexpectedly and just like that, a great light has been extinguished in the martial arts world.

Watching a video of a master really gives no inkling of their true talent. Probably you can see that Grandmaster moves very little and his opponenttawheed9 move very far, or that his fluidity has the quality of dance. None of that communicates what it feels like to go through those things and thats when the true appreciation of the level of Grandmaster begins. In one scene towards the end you may notice him being surrounded by students, he then shakes them off and proceeds to defend against multiple attacks from multiple angles. Those were some of my favorite moments with Grandmaster, as we would all be waiting for the right chance to “Git Him!” and then your moment of triumph would turn to comical incomprehension as you found yourself in an arm lock, being used as barrier against other opponents, or even better, upside down against the dojo wall.

Grandmaster Tauheed Grandmaster was the personification of the spiritual warrior, while warming up on the mats he was always deep in peace and meditation, and when throwing you across the room he was as well. He carried his art deep inside. Many who knew him outside of the dojo wouldn’t even realize he was a martial artist, and I feel for any “joker” (in his words) who took him lightly and tried to test him.

Having practiced the arts in a variety of style I can say that I have never worked with a living master who was as exquisitely talented as Grandmaster. He routinely defied my reason and inspired me with his creativity as he taught our small class the finer points of his arts. You never knew when you would get a lesson that transcended the physical techniques into the realms of philosophy, spirituality and simple right living.

Grandmaster was a teacher to me in all areas of my life. He taught me to be a stronger, tougher, more gentle and a more confident man. His lessons will live on in me, and I will always be grateful for the time I had with him as my Sensei. Thank you Grandmaster, Osuu.
